Carpenters and joiners work on- and off-site in workshops. They prepare, decorate and make building components and fittings. Carpenters and joiners can also be employed in building maintenance. Qualification: Certificate 3 Apprenticeship.

Concretors pour the footings, structural walls, columns and slabs on site. The concrete gang includes specific skills such as the pump operator and hoseperson or line hand, and the concrete floater and finisher.

A mobile crane is usually a telescoping or lattice boom type crane, mounted on a specially designed chassis which allows it to manipulate loads and travel under its own power. Qualfication: Certificate of Competency required.

A tower crane can be a cantilever or jib-type crane mounted on a tower so that loads can be lifted to greater heights. The height of the tower is "jumped" as more floors are added to the building. Qualification: Tower Crane Certificate of Competency.

The dogger plays a key role in materials handling on construction sites, working closely with crane drivers. The dogger has to load all materials correctly and communicate with the crane driver, via radio, whistles or hand signals, to ensure they are lifted and landed safely on the job. On big construction sites, there may be a number of doggers, working variously at street level and at the locations where the materials are being received. Qualifications: Certificate of Competency

Glaziers work in the construction industry both on- and off-site, cutting glass and installing in frames for windows, doors or internal walls or screens. Qualification: Certificate 3 Apprenticeship

Hoist drivers operate person and material hoists on high-rise construction sites. Qualifications: Certificate of Competency.

Labourers work in many different capacities on construction sites. They can do general labouring work eg. maintaining amenities (the peggy or nipper) or assist with specific tasks eg. formwork building or stripping. They are distinguished here from ticketed labourers - who have certified levels of competency in specific skills.
