Low-Income Workers Receive Extra $26-A-Week From Today

A $26 a week pay rise and income tax cuts begin today, providing much relief for working families faced with ever increasing living expenses.

More than 1.4 million workers will benefit as a result, receiving the extra $26 a week in their pay packets from today. The pay rise now lifts the minimum wage to $569.90 a week, or $15 an hour.

in addition the average worker will be an extra $450 a year better off as a result of tax cuts that also take effect from today.

The decision, announced by Fair Work Australia back in June, was a much needed boost for workers and broke the drought after a wage freeze of almost two years under the Howard Government’s wage-setting tribunal.

Ark Tribe court case now adjourned to July 20

The Ark Tribe court case will now reconvene on July 20-22 after the magistrate decided to adjourn the matter further.

The magistrate who needed to adjourn the case twice previously, said that the proceedings were vaildly brought and that the case should now continue as planned.

The defence, who originally argued the case should be thrown out on the grounds the prosecution lacked proper authority, will now continue their defence with Ark pleading not guilty.

Construction workers renew call for abolition of ABCC

Construction unions have again called on the Federal Government to abolish the Australian Building and Construction Commission (ABCC) after its head John Lloyd announced that he would not reapply for the position when his term expires in September.

CFMEU C&G Divsion National Secretary Dave Noonan said, “Mr Lloyd has been a vocal supporter of the Howard government’s policies and has even participated in meetings of the extremist HR Nicholls Society. Under his leadership the ABCC has failed to prosecute even one employer for ripping off construction workers wages and entitlements, despite having the responsibility to do so.

“But the real issue here is not who heads up the ABCC - it is that the law which underpins the institution is discriminatory and unfair. Justice will only be served when Australian workers are all subject to the same industrial laws. That means one law for all.
