CFMEU Releases Its Findings Into Bridge Collapse

The CFMEU ACT has released the findings from an independent investigation into the cause of the bridge collapse on the Barton Highway, Canberra.

The independent report found failures in the design specifications and formwork structure resulted in the collapse of the bridge, which as a result injured nine workers at the time.

The CFMEU are now calling on the ACT Government to take appropriate actions to ensure another horrific incidence like this never occurs again and those responsible for the bridge collapse are held accountable.

Protecting Workers’ Entitlements

Every year, thousands of Australian workers are made redundant when the company or business they work for collapses or goes into insolvency. Only then do they find out that the business had not set aside enough money to pay their rightful entitlements.

Australian employees work hard and deserve to know that their wages, superannuation and other entitlements are safe. They shouldn’t have to worry about being paid what they have already earned.

Julia Gillard and Labor have developed the Protecting Workers’ Entitlements package. This package stands in stark contrast to the Coalition, who will simply rip workers’ entitlements away.

Bridge Collapse Sparks Safety Blitz

In the wake of Saturday's bridge collapse in the city's north, the CFMEU is planning a crack down on of safety audits on construction jobs around Canberra, starting this morning.

The half-built bridge, part of the Gungahlin Drive Extension project, collapsed on Saturday during a concrete pour, injuring 15 workers with nine of them being treated in hospital.

CFMEU ACT branch secretary Dean Hall said, ''They heard a crack, there was a three-second delay and then it gave way.''

Dean Hall said on Sunday that the formwork contractor at the Gungahlin Drive job was also working on the Russell roundabout project and union officials planned to be auditing safety systems at the Russell site by 8am today.
